Thrissur is the cultural capital of Kerala. A number of Religious centers, venues of world famous festivals, places of historical importances and tourist centers are there in Thrissur. ThrissurPooram , one of the most colourful temple festival held in the world, is a visual feast. Kerala Kalamandalam the only institution, devoted to classical performing arts, is situated in the village of Cheruthuruthy.
Cheraman Juma Masjid, the first mosque in India is at Kodungallur. The Peechi Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the most picturesque national parks in Kerala is situated in Thrissur district. There is a Zoo, 2km from the town which animal enthusiasts can visit. Divine Retreat Centre at Potta is one of the largest retreat centers in the world.
Athirapally Waterfalls is nicknamed the Niagra of India. Here river gushes down through the rocks from a height of about 80 feet. Punnathoor Kotta, near Guruvayoor is one of the largest elephant parks in the world. It is believed that Guruvayurappan (Lord Krishna) is very fond of rearing elephants. In the lordship's stable, at 'PUNNATHOOR KOTTA' there are more than 62 elephants, all living together! Tourists flock to Punathurkotta to catch a glimpse of the elephants in their natural habitat.

Centuries old Guruvayoor Sreekrishna temple is a famous site for pilgrimage.. The temple's deity is Lord Guruvayurappan in the form of Balagopalan (Krishna in the form of a child). It is also a cultural centre. Here one can enjoy artforms Krishnanattam Kali, Kathakali, Anakotta etc. The temple is open at 3 am and closes after the day's poojas around 10 pm. Normally there are five poojas and three circumambulatory processions called Sreeveli, propitiating the celestial deities and carrying the Lord's Thidambu on elephant's back. During the days of Udayasthamana Poojas there will be a total of twenty one poojas.
Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours is the biggest and tallest church in Asia. It is famous for its Gothic style architecture. It has twin towers and eleven altars. The interior decorations include fine specimens of murals, images of saints and scenes from scriptures. The two front towers are of 146 feet height each and the central tower of 260 feet height makes the church tallest in Asia.
